Preparing for the RTS Signal switch-off

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) has been a cornerstone of electricity management for decades, allowing energy suppliers to control and manage electricity loads remotely. However, with technological advancements, the RTS signal is set to be switched off.

At World Kinect, we understand the importance of staying informed about changes that impact your energy management, this blog will guide you through what this change means and how you can get ready for a meter upgrade.

What is RTS?

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is a system that enables certain older, traditional (non-smart) multi-rate electricity meters to function properly. RTS allows these meters to switch between peak and off-peak rates or control when heating and hot water systems turn on and off. This service helps energy suppliers offer tariffs with cheaper off-peak rates, allowing customers to save on their energy bills by using electricity during less expensive times.

Why is RTS set to be switched off?

The RTS signal switch-off is part of a broader move towards modernising the electricity grid. The RTS system, which has been in use since the 1980s, is being phased out in favour of more advanced and efficient technologies. This transition is driven by the need for better energy management, improved reliability, and the integration of renewable energy sources.

The switch-off means that any electricity meters relying on the RTS signal will no longer function as intended. This change is significant because it affects how electricity usage is monitored and billed. Without an upgrade, affected users may face issues with their electricity supply and billing accuracy.

When will the switch-off take place?

RTS is scheduled to be switched off on June 30, 2025. After the switch-off, RTS meters will no longer function properly, which could lead to issues such as incorrect billing. Heating or hot water systems could be left continually on or off, causing potential issues with your business operations and resulting in cost implications.

Will I be affected?

The switch-off primarily affects users with older electricity meters that rely on the RTS signal. These meters are typically found in homes and businesses that have not yet upgraded to newer technologies. To determine if your meter is affected, look for signs such as a lack of digital display or reliance on off-peak tariffs controlled by the RTS signal.

If your meter relies on the RTS signal, you could experience disruptions in your electricity service. Failing to upgrade your meter can lead to service disruptions, inaccurate billing, and potential financial penalties. Additionally, you may miss out on the benefits of modern energy management technologies.

Users with RTS-dependent meters need to upgrade to modern meters. These new meters offer enhanced features, such as real-time usage monitoring, better accuracy, and the ability to integrate with smart business systems. Modern meters can also provide the same benefits of automatic peak and off-peak rate switching. Upgrading ensures a seamless transition and continued, reliable electricity service.

Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Smart meters provide numerous benefits for businesses.

Upgrading to a modern meter brings numerous benefits, these include improved billing accuracy, automated energy readings, real-time usage data, and the ability to participate in energy-saving programs. Modern meters also support the integration of renewable energy sources, helping you reduce your carbon footprint.

Your energy supplier should have already contacted you about the need to upgrade your meter, if not, World Kinect can assist you in this process. Upgrading is straightforward, free of charge in most cases, and typically involves minimal disruption.

The upgrade process involves replacing your old meter with a new one. This usually takes a few hours and may require a brief interruption in your electricity supply. However, the benefits far outweigh the temporary inconvenience.
